Hokies Get Harrison

Posted Thu, 11/01/2007 - 07:04 The Hokies of Virginia Tech get a verbal from the HoopGurlz Hundred for the second year in a row.

A verbal from Shanel Harrison, No. 62 in the HoopGurlz Hundred for the 2008 class, gives Virginia Tech its second straight recruiting class with a top-100 ranked player.
Hokies coach Beth Dunkenberger, heading into her fourth season at Tech, last year signed Andrea Barbour, the No. 41 prospect in the 2007 class.
Barbour, like Harrison, calls the DC-Maryland-Virginia region home. Recruiting the DMV for local schools is a must because of the talent oozing out of the region.
Harrison is a 6-foot guard who can play either shooting guard or small forward because of her strength. She plays for Good Councel in Olney, Md., which produced another top 100 prospect recently in Connecticut’s Kaili McLaren. The two played two seasons together.

There is an interesting dynamic behind the scenes. Virginia Tech this year hired George Porcha as an assistant coach. Porcha was a coach with Boo Williams Summer League and the rival Nike sponsored program of Harrison's team, the Fairfax Stars. Many assume when AAU or club coaches are hired for college positions they have an advantage for players that were in their program but getting players from your former rival seems like a coup.
Hokies fans are holding their breath that this idea of an edge exists for 2009. Porcha not only coached in the Boo Williams program but was also the Head Girls Basketball Coach and Athletic Director at T.C. Williams High School where Tierra Ruffin-Praff plays. Ruffin-Pratt is the No. 1 ranked guard in the class, according to HoopGurlz.com, and is the No. 3 overall ranked player. She will have her pick of schools but if Virginia Tech has their way she'll be staying in the region.
Virginia Tech is a place Harrison believes will allow her to grow as a player, according to her father, Jesse Harrison, and achieve her goals of becoming not only a great college player but a professional player.
Harrison brings and extreme toughness and does not appear to fear anyone on the floor. She is a player that will mix it up on the interior or move her feet on the perimeter. Offensively she is a talented slasher who can really finish on the move and punish smaller defenders. She is one of the most physical defenders you will find and should bring energy to the floor immediately for the Hokies.
Harrison’s list of awards and accolades is extensive. Going back to 2005 and 2,700 miles away from Fairfax, Va., she made the all-tournament team at End of the Trail in Oregon City. She was third team All-Metro in 2007, First Team All-WCAC and the All-Gazette Player of the Year her junior year.
